You know that feeling that you sometimes get when you’re talking to a person you’ve never met before, and you suddenly think ‘Hey. We could actually be good friends’? It’s that sense of instant connection, when an unknown magical force swoops in and you just click. Three months down the track, and that gal or guy is your new go-to person for coffee, Sunday brunch, movies, red wine and Orange is the New Black viewings (obsessed). Kind of like a boyfriend, but in some ways even better (no need to explain the purpose of makeup, why your skin care or haircut cost roughly the same figure as a small island, or why sometimes, you just had to have the completely impractical but beautiful shoes). You know what I’m talking about right?
Well, I’d like to think that Girl for Granted is a bit like that – no need for explanations, no awkward silences, just a chat among friends. I also love connecting people who I think will hit it off, and so I’m super excited to introduce a new column here, that I hope will become a regular feature – Girl (for Granted) Talk . Basically, I’m going to hook you guys up with a new best mate every now and then. I’m talking my favourite bloggers, gals who are killing it in their careers, those with a killer sense of style, or a great story to share. I hope you’re as excited as I am.
For the first Girl (for Granted) Talk, we’re chatting to Annie Reeves, of her eponymous blog. Her fun and beautiful blog celebrates the little things in life – and this South Carolina blogger does it in style. With no further ado…
Your elevator pitch?
I’m a freelancer of all sorts — from blogging to iPhone photography to social media management to content curation. I love the city where I live, and it has provided a creative community that helps me pursue a career consisting of things I truly enjoy!
Every morning around 6:30AM, my pup Hasell wakes me up and I let her outside while I brew a cup of coffee. We then both get back in bed, and I post my blog for the day to social channels, check my email (aka: read the Skimm), and browse my favorite blogs. I try and spend a few minutes every morning reading a daily devotion (I love She Reads Truth and praying — I find that it makes my days all the more enjoyable.)
Oh man. I absolutely love tulips because they remind me of my mom, but I can’t help but obsess over peonies.
Your proudest blogging moment?
I change scents too often to have a signature. Right now, I’m loving Bobbi Brown ‘Beach’.
Any tips for achieving work/life balance?
Great question — still working on this. For me, after a long day of work, it can be hard to motivate myself to go have a drink with friends or attend that night’s event. But, I’ve found that these commitments are really important to keep, and they end up being the most fun, too!
Your typical work day?
There’s no typical day, but you can read about a recent one here.
Books you always recommend – fiction and non fiction.
Fiction: Valley of the Dolls
How do you get through your to-do list?
Each day, I have an individual list for each client and for my personal brand. I find that it helps if I choose one at a time, write down the list, and check off each item — rather than writing it out all at once. It keeps me focused on one thing at a time!
Favourite way to spend Saturday?
Coffee in bed, delicious brunch, beach with a great book, and then ideally having friends over with lots of red wine, a huge cheese plate, and fun conversation!
Any must have tools of your trade, or things that you couldn’t live without?
Well, my iPhone. I’ve tried all sorts of to-do apps, but I love good old Notes and Calendar synced from computer to phone — never fails!
Three beauty essentials?
Your style in three words?
Simple, playful, comfortable
Favourite piece of a) life advice, and b) career advice?
a) “When you’re feeling down or upset, go out and do something nice for someone else!” My mom told me that before I left for college, and I’ve found it to be some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten.
b) My dad has always told me not to sweat the little things (so I celebrate them!)
What’s next for you?
Right now, I’m trying not to get ahead of myself. I love each of my projects for different reasons, and I’m very excited to see what the future holds!
